🍲Usrah 2 (5th week) : The Virtues Found in Sawm (Fasting), Zakah and Sadaqah
Assalamu’alaikum Everyone!
This week, we were blessed with presentations by two insightful groups. Group 3 presented on the virtues found in Ṣawm (Fasting), while Group 4 focused on the virtues found in Zakāh and Ṣadaqah. Both topics reminded us of the spiritual beauty behind two core pillars of Islam, fasting and giving, and how they serve as pathways to both taqwā and inner purification.
🕌 Presentation by Group 3: The Virtues Found in Ṣawm (Fasting)
The Qur’anic verse that underpins this is:
“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may become righteous (muttaqūn).”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:183)
🌟 Key Virtues of Fasting Shared in the Presentation:
1. Ṣabr (Patience and Perseverance)
Fasting trains us to endure difficulties, hunger, tiredness, emotional triggers, and respond with patience. Over time, this strengthens emotional and spiritual resilience, making us more composed even outside of Ramadan.
2. Takrīm (Respect and Honour)
The group highlighted how fasting instills discipline and self-respect. A fasting person is more mindful of their speech, gaze, and behavior. In turn, this earns the respect of others and cultivates inner dignity.
3. Raḥmah (Compassion and Empathy)
By feeling hunger, we begin to understand the struggles of the poor, a feeling that softens the heart and nurtures empathy. This is why fasting is deeply connected to acts of charity, especially during Ramadan.
🧠 Personal Reflection:
One point that struck me deeply was the emphasis on controlling the tongue. It’s easy to fast physically but still engage in backbiting or gossip. The group reminded us that fasting is invalidated not just by eating, but also by moral failures. This made me reflect on how I should protect my fast as a sacred act, not just a routine.
🕌 Presentation by Group 4: The Virtues Found in Zakah and Sadaqah
Zakat and sadaqah are not only acts of giving, they are acts of spiritual cleansing and community care.
1. Purification of Wealth and Soul
Giving zakat purifies what we own. It reminds us that wealth is a test and a trust, not something we fully own.
“Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase…” (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:103)
2. Brings Barakah, Not Loss
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Charity does not decrease wealth” (Sahih Muslim). It was a good reminder that giving for Allah’s sake actually increases blessings in ways we don’t expect.
3. Strengthens Social Ties
Zakat and sadaqah help support the poor and balance society. When done with the right intention, they create unity, love, and mercy among the people.
🧠 Personal Reflection:
This session helped me see that charity is not only for the one who receives, it also heals the giver, softens the heart, and protects us from greed. It made me reflect on how I can give more consistently, even if it’s just a small amount.
Thats all! Thank you guys!!😆
